STUDY: DATA SONIFICATION / AUDIO DESIGN / WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY/ HEALTH SCIENCE
YEAR: 2018

BRIEF
“The ways we move (or don’t move) are major concerns for health research in this information age. How do we create future concepts and scenarios for mediated awareness and health through sound & sonification in the modern Playful City??"
This studio explores the opportunities that sensing technologies and sound feedback offer for the awareness of personal movement activity and involve workshops on movement awareness, sensor data collection and sound design. These workshops inform the conceptualisation of personal devices attentive to the patterns, nuances and micromovements through sound response.

The aim of this design studio is:
1. Develop understanding of human movement and its essences, peculiarities and habits
2. Provide an understanding of sensing technologies and their ability to measure provide feedback on the patterns, nuances and micromovements through sound response.

REPLY BRIEF
SERENA is a wearable device designed for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) treatments which
assist with an individual’s recovery process from Social Anxiety Disorder. The proposed design will
include the following mechanism:

1. The movement and signs of apparent syndromes will be recorded in personalised devices catered to each individuals.
2. Through analysis of movement and sonification of data the device would automatically provide (in real time) a calming & rhythmic sound feedback that induces arousal reduction exercises (breathing exercises and posture correction) when patients happen to display signs of distress
